BUDGET AND ADVOCACY

Fairfax County: Nonprofit NoVA advocates met to discuss strategy and timeline for delivering our message and prioritizing programs that are essential to be restored if the Board of Supervisors agrees to sustain or increase the proposed taxes and fees.

Nonprofit NoVA advocates will present coordinated testimony on March 15, 2010 at 8:55pm before the Human Services Council - an advisory board that reports to the Board of Supervisors.

Public hearings on the budget will be on April 6th-8th. If you wish to speak to the Board at these hearings, contact the Office of the Clerk to the Board at 703-324-3151, or sign up online . In addition, you can submit your comments to the Board online , or on the budget hotline at 703-324-9400.

 

Loudoun County: Loudoun Cares' Andy Johnston wrote this OpEd in the Loudoun Times comparing Loudoun's investment in nonprofits to investment in Fairfax. He explained that cutting funding for nonprofits would be "penny wise, pound foolish."

WASHINGTON POST: Affordable Housing and the Redevelopment of Tysons

Michelle Krocker, Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance highlighted the importance of affordable and workforce housing guidelines to the redevelopment of Tysons.

The Tysons Task Force has recommended a variety of tools in order to address the imbalance of jobs and housing that currently exists in Tysons. If put into effect, housing opportunities will be available to workers earning between 50-120% of area median income.

 


NEIGHBORS IN NEED FUND

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region is now accepting applications for funding for the Spring 2010 Neighbors in Need Fund.

The Fund will award grants to nonprofit direct service organizations that help low-income and disadvantaged children and adults meet basic needs.

Northern Virginia Community College and Nonprofit NoVA would like to know if your organization has available classroom space --during the day, weekends and evenings. Fill out this one minute survey to let us know.

Nonprofits that have extra or unused space may be able to partner with Northern Virginia Community College to provide easier and friendler access to college programs or other benefits.

 


ARLINGTON NONPROFIT NETWORK
 
The Arlington Nonprofit Network (ANN) is mobilizing and advocating for a tax rate increase to cover the budget shortfall without cutting vital services.

The County budget will be presented on Feb 16 and a tax rate increase will be discussed at the County Board meeting on Feb 20.

LEGISLATION IMPACTS VIRGINIA NONPROFITS
The Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations (VANNO) is tracking 47 pieces of legislation that could impact Virginia nonprofits, including:
  • legislation allowing a locality to make gifts or donations to nonprofits engaged in providing energy efficiency services or promoting energy efficiency
  • legislation creating income tax credits for businesses and individuals who make contributions to public school or scholarship foundations
  • legislation recognizing the important contributions of philanthropy and private foundations and encouraging the formation of these entities in Virginia

Member Update

The Arlington Community Foundation's college scholarship program, in partnership with Silverwood Companies, was mentioned in Citybizlist.

Loudoun Cares
was awarded a grant from the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region to support the Loudoun Cares Information and Referral Help Line, reports the Washington Post.

Northern Virginia Community College's Mark Mannheimer commented on the falling rates of adults with a college degree in the US in a National Public Radio segment. Separately, NVCC president Bob Templin spoke out in support of national immigration reform legislation that would provide a pathway for immigrant students to apply for legal residence, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Alternative House has been named "Nonprofit of the Year" by the Vienna Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Carol DeVita from the Urban Institute presented data from her recent study, Racial-Ethnic Diversity in the Baltimore-Washington Region's Nonprofit Sector. View Carol's Northern Virginia specific presentation here.
 
Panelists Rosetta Thurman and Mary Agee shared their own perspectives on diversity in our region as well as common challenges that nonprofits face such as the "diversity v. talent" question, a limited pool of applicants for open positions, and limited resources to invest in staff.
