BUDGET AND ADVOCACYFairfax County: Nonprofit NoVA advocates met to discuss strategy and timeline for delivering our message and prioritizing programs that are essential to be restored if the Board of Supervisors agrees to sustain or increase the proposed taxes and fees. Nonprofit NoVA advocates will present coordinated testimony on March 15, 2010 at 8:55pm before the Human Services Council - an advisory board that reports to the Board of Supervisors. Public hearings on the budget will be on April 6th-8th. If you wish to speak to the Board at these hearings, contact the Office of the Clerk to the Board at 703-324-3151, or sign up online . Loudoun County: Loudoun Cares' Andy Johnston wrote this OpEd in the Loudoun Times comparing Loudoun's investment in nonprofits to investment in Fairfax. Michelle Krocker, Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance highlighted the importance of affordable and workforce housing guidelines to the redevelopment of Tysons. The Tysons Task Force has recommended a variety of tools in order to address the imbalance of jobs and housing that currently exists in Tysons. If put into effect, housing opportunities will be available to workers earning between 50-120% of area median income.
NEIGHBORS IN NEED FUND
The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region is now accepting applications for funding for the Spring 2010 Neighbors in Need Fund. The Fund will award grants to nonprofit direct service organizations that help low-income and disadvantaged children and adults meet basic needs. LEGISLATION IMPACTS VIRGINIA NONPROFITS The Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations (VANNO) is tracking 47 pieces of legislation that could impact Virginia nonprofits, including:
- legislation allowing a locality to make gifts or donations to nonprofits engaged in providing energy efficiency services or promoting energy efficiency
- legislation creating income tax credits for businesses and individuals who make contributions to public school or scholarship foundations
- legislation recognizing the important contributions of philanthropy and private foundations and encouraging the formation of these entities in Virginia
