PRS, Inc., a nonprofit providing skill training and support to adults recovering from mental illness, received the highest level of CARF accrediation after an extensive, multi-layered review of their services and management. CARF is a national, independit accreditor of human service providers. According to CARF, "This achievement is an indication of your organization's dedication and commitment to the qualify of the lives of the persons served. Services, personnel, and documentation clearly indicate an established pattern of practice excellence." * Yes, Virginia, We DO Collaborate! Many people are unaware of the high level of collaboration and partnership between nonprofits in Northern Virginia. Here is one recent example: "A holiday food drive sponsored this fall by Our Daily Bread, Inc. (ODB) and Combined Properties, Inc. will help re-stock food pantries in Fairfax County at a time when many area hunger relief organizations face critical food shortages and overwhelming demand. ODB has organized a cooperative effort among local non-profits so that each organization will provide volunteers for a week and then collect that week’s donations for their own food pantry. The drive will be open each Saturday and Sunday from November 8-December 14, 2008. ODB Executive Director Lisa Whetzel said the event will meet an important need while allowing the organizations to share the work—and the benefits—at a busy time of year. “The support of these organizations and the generosity of Combined Properties truly make this a win-win for everyone involved,” Whetzel said. Participating agencies Lorton Community Action Committee, United Christian Ministries, Annandale Christian Community in Action, Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, Food for Others, SHARE and Herndon Reston FISH. They all serve different geographic regions, but each has clients in danger of going hungry." The business Combined Properties donated the space for food to be collected, next to a popular grocery store, and will donate grocery store gift cards to the organization that has collected the most food. |
